The live music brand wanted to position itself as the #1 destination for discovering and supporting local independent music in the Bay Area while extending the reach of its promotional efforts to drive ticket sales.
Role
As the lead strategist and producer on this project, I developed the concept, put together the core team, and ran the day-to-day operations of booking, hosting, editing, and releasing the weekly video podcast.
Strategy
The biggest strength of the brand was always its access to the high-caliber talent that came through the doors of its clubs, so the Slim’s Presents Podcast was conceived as a way to leverage that talent in new ways to drive brand awareness, engagement, and affinity, while also helping to drive ticket sales and provide business opportunities for the company.
I began by putting together a small production team that included one of the club’s up-and-coming talent buyers to assist me with booking, a local comedienne to co-host, and a few sound and lighting techs from the clubs to complete the production operation. When choosing a name for the podcast, we wanted to have something seemingly irreverent that encapsulated something authentic about the brand and its values. The name Between You, Me & Jose (BYMJ for short) paid homage to one of the core characters of the Slim’s family, chef Jose Yanez, whose welcoming personality, sense of humor, and next-level homestyle cooking greeted road-wary bands from all over the world, earning him legendary status amongst artists and fans alike (find him in the liner notes of some of your favorite punk and metal bands).
The podcast utilized a long-form interview format with occasional live acoustic performances that went in-depth with touring bands, local talent, journalists, agents, and entrepreneurs across a variety of unfiltered subjects.
Outcome
The video podcast was released weekly on YouTube and syndicated to iTunes, Stitcher, and all other major podcasting platforms for three 10-episode seasons. The podcast was incredibly successful in providing a number of business and partnership opportunities, spreading awareness of the brand and guests, and helping to grow the Slim’s Presents YouTube channel.
